The Way of the Road

The Rushmore Roadkill Hockey Club has been in existence since the spring of 2002. Our love for the sport of Hockey was reignited when the City of Rapid City opened the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena in December of 2001. A small group of players assembled and decided that we would like to broaden our recreation league experience and see if we could play some teams from other communities in South Dakota, so we formed our own travel team, and subsequently formed our club.

As were all involved with youth hockey in some way, shape or form, we decided that we would like to get involved in a small financial way to raise money for youth hockey. As a majority of the teams we had come in contact with were also involved as coaches and referees and hockey association members, our fundraising efforts naturally evolved into an “end of the youth season” hockey tournament for the adults. Combining that with our name, “the Roadkill”, we came up the “End of the Road” Tournament.

The tournament first came into being as a four team round robin series of games in the spring of 2003, as our efforts seemed to be successful we decided that we would invite four teams in an “A” division and four teams in a “C” division. We networked with the Hooligans Hockey Club, utilized some of their contacts and were able to put together a tournament for everyone to come and play and for the fans to enjoy.

The tournament has continued to grow to the point of having eight teams each in the "A" and "C" Divisions utilizing the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena and the Rushmore Thunder's Thunderdome. We hope each year we learn making subsequent tournaments more memorable.
